Betsy and I were chatting one day while we looked out on a blizzard and she mentioned that when she was young her Mom used to make ice cream out of snow, Snow Cream! Strangely enough, my Mom used to make the same thing!
So I figured I would mix up a batch of Snow Cream for dessert. This is a super-easy activity to do with kids and it’s easy to add a shot of bourbon to make it “adult” friendly as well!
These are really great and can be made with all kinds of different flavors. This version of Snow Cream is a plain vanilla base with cinnamon!
Snow Shakes
Ingredients
- 2 Cups milk, I like 2%
- ½ Cup sugar
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla
- Lots of snow
- Bourbon, optional
Instructions
- Stir together ingredients except snow. Feel free to add any other flavors that suit your needs.
- Stir milk into mixture slowly into a big bowl of fresh snow (at least 4-5 cups). It should form a rough slush. You might need more snow.
- Serve immediately!

How to Make Snow Cream
First you want to make your snow cream base so add your sugar to milk and stir it well until it is all dissolved. You could, of course, add more sugar if you want but it can get pretty sweet pretty fast so I would recommend starting with this.
Then add your vanilla. I thought about adding lemon extract or chocolate, and I think those would work just fine, but at the end of the day vanilla was my preferred flavor.
You can add your bourbon to this base or you can add it per serving. Your choice!
You needs LOTS of clean snow to make Snow Cream so make it right after a fresh snow fall.
Then slowly add your milk base to your snow until it turns to a slush with the consistency of a milk shake. For me this was about 4 cups of snow to 2/3 cup of milk base.
Stir it together with a fork or whisk, pour it in a glass and go to town. I also sprinkled some cinnamon on mine for some garnish.
Bourbon Snow Cream
One shot of bourbon along with 1/2 Cup of milk base and you are all set. It’s a night cap and a dessert all wrapped together in one.
A sprinkle of cinnamon is still a good idea!
These snow cream bowls are really great even if it is cold outside (the whiskey helps warm the soul).
These are a great little snack, especially if you have kids. Although obviously don’t serve them the bourbon version!

A couple of thoughts. First of all, they look like delicious little shakes, especially with your added.. um.. spirit! Second, as a teacher, I always taught my students that snow was full of dirt… even the pristine stuff… as it collects particles of dust in the atmosphere as it falls. That being said, I grew up eating loads of snow and I'm still here to talk about it- healthy and all. So I'm thinking snow shakes are 'safe' to make LOL!

I've never thought of making something out of snow, but this looks really good Nick. Yes we got a ton of snow, so great opportunity to make these Snow Shakes!

An essential tip you left out – Avoid the yellow snow.

You’d think that’d be common sense…

What a neat idea! There’s still snow on the ground, so I better hurry and make those for my daughter today, she will love it!

I'm not a big fan of the cold, which means this recipe suits me perfectly as it is probably best consumed in the heat. :)
I love the grown-up version of slushy snow-coney goodness! Thanks for the idea.

this is so yummy!

Delicious! Me and my best friend are having a blast making and tasting this! I remember my aunt making me these as a kid and finally remembered to find a recipe for it.
